Reader Email: Why are my BRG requests being denied?

Hi everyone,
Thrilled to find this group: the BRG is an amazing way of getting free accomodation. I have used it in the US as well as in the UK. But I have had problems when comparing to websites with pre-paid rates, such as Expedia. Triprewards Best Rates are not pre paid, and that´s been a reason to neglect my claims. What´s your experience about this?

Hi Marcus, thanks for the message,

Almost 100% of BRG opportunities are through Expedia, Travelocity, and other prepaid sites. If a rate is not prepaid, it is most often through the hotel itself, which is usually the same price as Triprewards is. The prepaid rates are rates that have been negotiated by websites with the hotel themselves - the hotel does not set those rates and cannot change them.

I think the BRG staff may just be giving you a hard time, or you may be making an error in your claim forms. I'd need to know the exact error they're giving you to help you out further, but the website should not be an issue whatsoever, unless you are using Skoosh or one of the prepaid voucher sites (where a printed voucher is generated and you must take this to the hotel to check in). For more info about that, see my rant on Skoosh back in January.

Please read some of the earlier posts of this blog to learn how to maximize the chances of success with your BRG claims.

If you get a denial that says "We are unable to find the lower rate on the website you provided", especially if it's from the Best Rate employee named Bryan, just resubmit the claim at a different time (after hours or before noonish central time), and it's pretty much guaranteed that the morning employees will have no trouble finding it. This same scenario has happened to me about 4 times in a row now. If the claim is not from a "standard" site like Expedia, Travelocity, or, Bryan will always give the "can't find" denial. Don't be discouraged; just resubmit and avoid Bryan if you can!! Good luck!

So if another website demands pre-paying, it´s not a reason for Triprewards to deny my reguest - even if Triprewards rate not is pre-paid? Strange... The conditions for cacellation must be exactly the same, I have had requests denied for that reason.

That is totally incorrect. Literally ALL of my BRG claims in my life have been prepaid rates on other sites, whose cancellation policies greatly differ from Triprewards. Expedia special rates are usually the only rates that are cheaper than Triprewards, and they are always prepaid, there and then, at the time of booking.

Whoever is telling you your claims are invalid is either misleading you, or the site you are trying to base your BRG request on is a prepaid voucher program. Much different than a prepaid rate. Sites like GTAtravel, Skoosh, OctopusTravel are prepaid voucher programs. Expedia, Travelocity,, Orbitz, Cheaptickets, Hotwire, Priceline, and are all fair game for BRG requests.

And like I said, all my rates have been of the prepaid type on competitor websites. And I'm approaching my 200th successful claim.
