Wyndham Hotels and Resorts (Luxury Chain) follows suit with new BRG Terms and Conditions (but it's not all bad!)

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, the luxury, top-end chain of the Wyndham Worldwide company, followed suit and has implemented the exact terms and conditions of the WR chain.

As far as I could see, the terms are now identical - one room per month for this chain, BUT it does not appear that you must book a prepaid "Webrate". I cannot see the word "Webrate" even mentioned anywhere on their website anymore as part of the terms and conditions. Therefore, it may now be possible to file a BRG claim on fully refundable rates - if that is the case, I'd be pretty happy.

Changes I noticed include:

- You must file your claim within 24 hours now, not within 72 hours as before
- It seems that all rates, except the usual voucher, organization, negotiated are included.
- Same rule implemented about rates within $0.25.
- These BRGs are now based on the PRE-TAX rate (again, like WR).

I'm actually fairly content with them matching the terms and conditions. It will be less confusing for all concerned.

Is Wyndham Rewards no longer allowing refundable vs. refundable claims if a non-refundable lower rate exists?

For the past five years, we've been able to claim BRGs that are refundable on the competitor (eg. Expedia) and refundable on WR, even if WR has a lower, non-refundable rate. These apples-to-apples and oranges-to-oranges comparisons was the cornerstone for many-a-BRG in my world.

For example, WR would have a regular "Best Available Rate for" $79.99, and a 14 day advance purchase non-refundable rate for 10% off, so $72.00. Expedia has the rate for $75.99, without any non-refundable clause. Usually, a situation like this would allow the BRG to be approved - Expedia still beats the WR refundable rate.

Now, however, they are handing out the "you should have booked the non-refundable room" response. This is completely new, and in light of the circumstances, a couple of our recent BRG opportunities will not work (sorry). But, in any case, try and see. It doesn't hurt to try (and let us know how you fare).

A reader let me in on this important tidbit of information today by sending me their rejection letter from Brian Triebold. Here is that email, so you can see the exact wording:

This may be another example of Wyndham's clear reversal on their commitment to honor the Best Available Rate.

If this is true, the only way I can see a person getting around this is if the lower non-refundable rate carries with it an advance purchase clause. If its a 14 day advance special, there is a chance that the hotel will not offer this discount within 14 days of your stay. So, in that case, the Best Available Rate would be the only option, and thus your claims would be OK.

Free Movie Ticket Offer is dead, but there is still hope for those who missed out...

A couple of days ago, Rick over at the FrugalTravelGuy.com posted a deal for a free movie ticket for AMEX cardholders. This deal died quickly, as it was posted all over the internet (Fatwallet, Slickdeals, Flyertalk, just to name a few). But, there is hope for those who missed it while it lasted.

In a comment on his post, Rick notes:

"I just read my American Express Email as I had written them about the email saying the promo was not being honored. The response from Amex was indeed that they received a highly unusual amount of request and the promotion was ended. As an expression of their concern Amex credited my account with $50 in lieu of the movie tickets.

Don't forget to ask Amex about this."

Sage advice - try to get the $50, you have nothing to lose by asking...

Rick reports that others have not fared as well as he had - many people have reported a $15 credit on their statement in lieu of the movie tickets.

I don't think I'll be riding Greyhound anytime soon...

When I was 18 and 19, I rode the Greyhound bus all over North America - to every corner of Canada, the USA, and Mexico. I spent a total of six months touring these countries, and while I can agree that Greyhound does cater to the "interesting" realm of society and the co-riders aren't always the most normal people you could encounter, I never really had any problems with crime, or in this case, murder.

I was planning a trip to Florida soon, thinking of riding Greyhound down (a 30 hour drive), but I think I'll take a plane, instead.

Canada's CTV news broke a story today about a Greyhound bus travelling to Winnipeg, Manitoba (the same bus which I've rode countless (at least 40) times in my life) on which a murder took place. In the middle of the night, one teenager attacked another (who was sleeping), repeatedly stabbing him in the neck and then decapitating him.

I have not heard a story this morose and depressing in a long time. This level of psychosis is something usually only seen in movies. To think I could have easily been a passenger on this bus and witnessed this is beyond belief. The attack does appear to be targeted, though (the attacker let everyone off of the bus without harming them, so I'm assuming this was to settle a score).

I'd expect (well, I'd strongly hope) that Greyhound will re-work its security (it has none) and have passengers go through X-Ray and metal detection devices before boarding. If buses were treated the same as planes, an attack like this would have been impossible.

Just my two cents, but I do think the bus is one of the most unsafe forms of travel.

New Information on the new T&C's: One Room per month, not one claim per month

Update! Please note that this post was based on incorrect information that has since been redacted and clarified by Wyndham. The current terms and conditions allow for one claim per month; the number of stays in a given month is irrelevant.

Original Post:

There has been some confusion about whether it's one valid claim per month (ie. you must file claims one at a time every month, but you can stack those claims for a long vacation in one month) or one room per month (you can file claims as you see fit, but you may only have one free room per month - ie. you can't have 3 free rooms in September, but you can file 3 claims in September for stays in November, December, and January.

A reader sent me an "official" response from Wyndham, which points to the latter being true (sadly). Thus, to make use of your 12 free rooms per month, you would need to travel for at least one night every month. No more strings of free rooms to make the perfect vacation.

Here's the correspondence:

My reader's email:

"I do have a question about the new policy. The limit to one free
room per customer per month, I take it that means if I submit a successful
claim for a room during the month of July for a stay in August, I cannot put
in another claim in the month of July. It is the month of application, not
the month you are intending to stay?""

The official response from Todd Tucker:

"To answer your questions the new policy is that a person can have one
valid claim per month. Meaning if you submit a claim in July for August
and it gets approved that is fine. If you submit another claim in July
for July and it gets approved that is fine. You can still submit as many
claims as you want for what ever months you want, it is just simply down
to one valid Best Rate claim approved each month."

This just in: Changes to the BRG program (that I think we'd all figured would come eventually)

Let this be the take-home message of this post: You can't run a blog with over 120,000 visitors per month and expect life to flow perfectly with an indefinite stream of free hotel rooms coming in. Instead of keeping this promotion a secret, and have it be a self-serving method of me saving money while the rest of you would be paying top-dollar, I've (from the get-go) shared my wealth of knowledge, tips, and the BRG opportunities themselves that we find with you, my faithful readers, so that there would be a bit of equality in all of this mess.

Well, the day has come that we've all been dreading. Now, don't panic - it's bad, but it could have been much worse. The staff here at the blog have had a gut feeling for a while now that things were about to change, which is why we probably went on room-booking sprees a couple of weeks ago, hoping to lock in as many as we could, as that gut feeling was getting stronger each day. And it truly was the harbinger of things to come, and I'm glad I finalized some travel plans while I could.

Without further ado, I'll cease rambling like a madman and tell you what has happened: Wyndham Rewards has changed their terms and conditions.

The changes are as follows (at least from what I can see):

"Due to rounding and other issues, rates within $.25 of our Best Available Rate will be considered a match and will not qualify for Best Rate Guarantee claims."

-This means that your beloved $69.99 rate won't work against a $70.00 WR rate any longer. I'm not too worked up about this particular one.

"Only one valid claim can be submitted per person, per e-mail address, per calendar month."

- This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. They now are refusing to truly honor whether they have the "Best Available Rate" more than 12 times per year, per person. Luckily, I have friends that I travel with, so this won't sting as much as it potentially could. A big SHAME ON YOU to Wyndham Rewards for basically saying that your guarantee is only valid once per month - why even have a guarantee? For a long while, you've been on top of the game in the business, having a solid guarantee. Now, well, it's almost useless, and its really not a guarantee at all. To all the Todd Tucker's and Jonathan Gould's up in Wyndham's head office on the Great Plains of South Dakota, I ask, what the hell are you thinking?

I urge everyone to write letters of objection to Wyndham and their staff. You can start by emailing this address and ask them why they will only honor their "guarantee" once per month - what about the countless other times that their rates are not lower. Oh, I forgot, its not the "Guaranteed Best Available Rate" it's the "We Have No Staff and Have to Shut You Up Somehow so Here's a Dozen Free Rooms Per Year Promotion". Someone really screwed up on what the essence of this guarantee is all about - honoring the fact that you don't have the lowest rate available. If they don't have the staff, then hire more - but don't call this new thing a "guarantee" of any sort.

"All reservations must be for personal use only and booked by the guest who will actually be staying at the hotel. Reservations booked by brokers or agents will not qualify. Best Rate Claims and any free nights issued under this program are not transferable."

-I've only transferred one hotel room from another person to me, and that is when they were severely ill and couldn't make the trip. I don't disagree with this new addition at all. If you are booking a claim for another person, then there is a simple solution - get them to book their own room and stop doing the work for them ;)

Days Inns reserve the right to reject a Best Rate Claim and/or to cancel any free night previously issued by it in the event of fraud or abuse of this Program or non-compliance with these Terms and Conditions.

-Wow, I hope what we do here on the blog isn't "fraud" (sarcasm). I might be egotistical, but I think that this is directed towards me and my staff. My response: If getting free nights based on the fact that we find cheaper rates on other websites is "fraud" or "abuse" then so be it. I probably book 1 out of every 40 hotels listed on this blog, and the same is true for the other writers. Two words: Idle threats.

Okay, okay, so I'm using fighting words. But, I'm serious - this is no longer a guarantee, it's a charade. As for us here at the blog, we will continue searching out free rooms for you every day until this thing sinks for good. We'll be continuing to support you in your search for free and frugal travel, no matter if the BRG exists or it does not. For now, choose wisely, tread carefully, and as always, help keep us on the internet, doing what we do best, by continuing to visit our main sponsor, Kayak Inc., for all of your comparison searches.

Please consider "taking it to the streets" with this and protesting the changes in claims. Even "one claim per person per day" or "per week" would be better than "per month". Is this a joke?

Coveniently located off the I-10 Freeway, this Ramada Plaza, is just one exit west of Loop 610 West. You are literally just a few minutes away from the Galleria and Downtown areas of Houston, Texas.

This one got a confirmed approval yesterday...act fast before this hotel changes the rates!

Super 8 Motel- Sarasota, FL

This is one of those BRG's where you have multiple "2 Double Bed" room types offered, where the rates are different for each, yet the description for each is nearly identical!

As I always recommend, your best bet in these cases is to book the lowest-priced "2 Doubles" on WR, then use the lowest-priced "2 Doubles" on the competing site (in this case, hotelsatanywhere.com) as your "lower rate found" on your claim form.

All the "higher-priced" 2 Doubles are unspecified upgrades which can't be interpreted.

Super 8 Motel-San Antonio/ Riverwalk Area (San Antonio, TX)

This 55-room Super 8 Motel is just 4 miles outside of Downtown San Antonio. This property just opened back in 2004. They have free parking here and a complimentary Super-Start Breakfast.

This one got a confirmed approval today....hurry, it may not last!

Update on reader Alan's unfortunate BRG stay problems

Many of you have been curious as to how Alan's situation panned out. As we told you early this month, he was dinged with a bill for $125.00 in fake taxes and fees - everything but the kitchen sink, really (and they would probably have charged for that too, if there was one).

You can refresh your memory by reading that entry and the follow-up.

As he told us, he ended up leaving the hotel (the Vancouver Airport Travelodge, for reference's sake) and going to the nearby Marriott instead.

He emailed me that evening and told me the story, and I told him to email one of the best supervisors at Wyndham Worldwide to work it out. After a while, the supervisor stated that he would send in his reciept and they would take care of it.

I'm pleased to say that by following the advice here at the BRG Blog, Alan has been sent a cheque for the room rate of his Marriott stay (taxes and fees were not reimbursed). Even so, I think that Wyndham Worldwide really went the extra mile here for Alan and kept their property in line. That property will now likely face a steep fine, including that of Alan's Marriott cost.

So, if any of you need advice, we're here to help. When things look like they're at their worst, we're just an email away.

Here's a Wyndham Webmatch BRG that comes to us from Mike (the terms of Wyndham Webmatch BRGs are substantially different than Wyndham Rewards BRGs - see more here). Prime location in the heart of Chicago and its many attractions. Remember, these are prepaid BRGs, and you will be repsonsible for the full cost of your hotel stay if you claim is denied. Luckily, many have had this one approved. This one can be found by searching Kayak for "Chicago" hotels.
